A record of our ancient Brochs, Hill-forts and Sculptured Stones of Scotland
Brochs, Forts and Stones studies: Sutherland Strath Helmsdale
A fairly ruinous pile of stone which stands facing Kilphedir Broch across the River Helmsdale. There is an interesting suspension bridge to cross.
The broch is a block in the landscape and has a complex footprint of wall cells. Its a long walk in.
The broch sits high above the Helmsdale River in a busy archaeological landscape. It has fine views across and up the strath.
A much-altered site above the upper River Helmsdale at a site controlling access through to the west. A popular salmon fishing beat runs below the broch.
